Park Slope Center for Mental Health has been serving the community as a mental health provider since 1983.

Headquartered in Brooklyn and available in all five boroughs, the center provides a variety of services for children, teens, adults and families including individual, family and group therapy, psychiatric care, and medication management.

And PSCMH originally was focused on seniors, but has evolved to support people of all ages over the years. They consider all aspects because emotional, physical and behavioral health are interconnected.

The social workers, counselors, creative arts therapists, marriage and family therapists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners on their team collaborate to help clients develop resilience and strength.

Best-in-class psychodynamic and trauma-focused therapies to provide the support individuals need to navigate obstacles and confidently re-establish balance in their life.

Mental Health Services Provided By Park Slope Center

1. Adult Program

Park Slope Center for Mental Health provides therapy for adults, those in need of either short-term help or long-term treatment. Adults can see a therapist one-on-one, or sit in on group therapy sessions.

In individual therapy, you’ll collaborate with your therapist to gain insight into your issues, see your strengths and take positive actions in your life.

Therapists are also great for other needs like parenting, case management or handling your medications so that way you can get the most organized care that meets your needs.

This program is offered in English and in Spanish and offers group therapy in a supportive environment to learn, help people connect with one another and focus on their mental and emotional well-being.

These support groups can build self-confidence, foster better relationships, and promote self-care and advocacy.

2. Children & Family Program

The Children & Family Program at the Park Slope Center offers therapy to help children, teens, and families to environment index and stronger bonds. Services offered include individual therapy for kids and teens, family therapy and parenting support.

Therapeutic sessions can include play, creative arts or talk therapy guiding young people through challenges at home, school or with peers while instilling self confidence and problem solving skills.

Parents play an important part in the process of partnering with therapists to foster their child’s development as well as addressing issues and learning strategies to cope with parenting challenges.

Parents are also able to reflect on their own needs within a safe and supportive container while also supporting their children.

Therapy is a family affair and parents participate fully through sessions, check-ins and if need be separate meetings.

3. Psychiatric Assessments

PSCMH also has the option of psychiatric evaluations early on in treatment or anytime throughout. These assessments assist in diagnosing and planning treatment and medications.

When adults enter a facility the intake process involves completing a risk assessment which identifies the potential for harm to self or others as well as screenings for substance use and if indicated a mental status exam.

For children, assessments mainly look for risks to self or others and include screenings for depression, post-traumatic stress, and general strengths and challenges.

With parent consent, other assessments can be completed to assess for diagnoses such as depression or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ensuring children and their families have a complete approach to receiving  high-quality support.
